Homework is assigned nightly from Monday through Thursday.
In 3rd grade, about 30 minutes of homework per night is the norm.
Homework consists of the following:

Assignment that extends or reviews concepts

learned during the school day. This assignment may

be in any of the subject areas. (10-15 minutes)

Nightly reading: independently or with a parent

(15 minutes)
If your child is having difficulty with the homework, or it is taking much longer than 30 minutes, please let me know by writing a note on the homework, agenda, or email me. Thank you! That information is very helpful.
Missing homework assignments result in a Homework Alert, which is a card that will let you know which assignment was not passed in and when it was due. The missing assignment is due back to me the following day along with the Homework Alert signed by both the student and a parent.
In addition to the regularly assigned homework, Bonus Work is offered daily. These assignments vary from day to day, but are usually short challenges, brainteasers, or extra skill practice in any subject. Each bonus assignment earns students 1 point. Longer or more complex bonus assignments may earn more points.
No, bonus assignments are purely optional. However, I keep careful track of which students go the extra mile.
Every student in the classroom is responsible for writing the bonus assignment in his/her agenda each night, even if they do not plan on completing it. Parents can rest assured that they will know every opportunity their child has to push themselves academically.
The Weekly Math Challenge, or WMC, is another optional activity that is assigned on Monday and due on Friday. It is a challenging math problem which the students must solve and show their work.
Parents are welcome to help their child with the WMC, but all students who pass it in must be able to explain their strategies, ideas, and solutions when we meet to discuss it on Fridays.
Students who complete the WMC earn 5 points.
